BUT NOT JUST PHOTOS!
But what makes this collection of photographs unique?
There is one key difference between this collection of photos and others (although we are not aware of any other collection of photos available as an online download:
Google Earth
American Civil War Photographs has used the more straightforward Place Marks tool within Google Earth to pinpoint the location of many photographs taken during the Civil War. In other words, we have identified the point where either the photographer stood when taking the photograph or the location of the subject matter itself (sometimes both).
These has been identified on Google Earth, and with a simple double-
Important note: Of course, when we say exact spot, no one from American Civil War Photographs was there with the photographer taking the photograph. What we have done is carry out extensive research online, careful study of locations on Google Earth and in some cases made personal visits to locations to pinpoint as accurately as possible where the photographer was at the time a picture was taken.
AND A TINY BIT MORE
Another unique feature of this collection is the inclusion of a small number of recent photographs taken at the same locations as the original photographs from the Civil War era. These new images allow the viewer to really see that these historical events, although distant in time are closer in reality then they appear.
How might this be used?
Showing the archive photographs beside current images will allow students to truly visualise what happened.
Standing on the Antietam battlefield looking at Dunker Church on a lovely autumn afternoon is very enjoyable (I highly recommend a visit to this park: it really is superb).
But imagine being able to show a Civil War image of a dead soldier and say, ‘That spot there: that spot is exactly where it happened, where a man died; where a battle was fought which shaped this country forever’.
This can be shown by the short video clip below which recreates 8 classic images taken at several key locations on the Antietam Battlefield, Maryland, (this video is also on the Video History Today YouTube channel).
Antietam: Then & Now
The video clip featured here shows the recreation of 8 Civil War era images from the Battle of Antietam in September 1862.

Modern video & Archive photograph clip
Video History Today has also made a similar clip using video clips rather then stills of the locations at Antietam today and comparing them with the historic photos: this can be viewed by clicking here.
